Hi guys! So ~Airlight showed up at Sonic Boom and offered to sketch Syron for me. I loved it so much I gave it the full-picture treatment and colored it. However I decided to digitally paint/softcell this picture instead of my usual color style. It was a bit trickier than expected and was really a good practice picture. Plus, it lends itself to the style he sketched it in.
Airlight was always a huge inspiration for me because of his chaotic coloring and posing style and really influenced my work early on. Getting to work on a picture he did for me is a real treat to say the very least. He really did Sy justice. This week I'm doing more contest prizes, but this was a little treat for me and also a bit of practice to sharpen up some more skills. I really love digital painting impressionistic backgrounds now. I think the BG on this was a 10 minute speedpaint. Strangely enough it worked very well.
Thanks ~Airlight, I will patiently wait for you to post something again (seeing as you poof'd a while ago).
Ah, it's great to see how this turned out. Awesome job, Dan! I think your coloring style meshes quite well with ~Airlight's lines. =] Not sure if he's ready to crack open his old account just yet, but he wanted me to relay the following:
"Wow, after seeing what you did with the picture, I wish I didn't draw such a generic, stagnant pose for Syron- you did a really great job with the lines and coloring! It'd be fun to collaborate again in the future."
Keep up the great work! We look forward to seeing more. =] *bows*
I remember reading about the sketch that Arilight had made of Syron for you, but your collab was over the top! Your coloring style really makes this drawing pop, from Syron's eye shading to the glow of the hylex crystals! (forgive me if that's not what they're called) And you took ten minutes on such an amazing background? I take hours for mine to look not even half as good! Keep up the great work, Dan!
Well I must admit it was awesome to getting seeing him in person after seeing his work in that past. I only so bits and pieces of the sketch at Sonic Boom but man does it look incredible when it all comes together.
